Glozhene Monastery

Glozhene Monastery
map Glozhene Monastery

The Glozhene Monastery (Glozhenski manastir) is an active Eastern Orthodox monastery located on the northern slopes of Stara Planina, near the village of Glozhene, 12 km from Teteven. Unlike other monasteries in Bulgaria, it is not hidden in the depths of mountain forests. It is erected on high ledge, the steep cliff isolating it from the surrounding area.

The monastery was built in the 13th century (1224), when Ukrainian knyaz Georgi Glozh settled in the area with Ivan Asen II's approval. The knyaz founded a monastery carrying the name of St George, whose icon he had brought with him.

The monastic complex is composed of four residential buildings and one church. The residences are arranged in rectangular formation, inclosing the church within an inner yard accessible only from the entrance gate. It actually looks more like a fortress than a monastery. The residential buildings were built in 1858 and reconstructed later. The Sveti Geogri church was erected after the creation of the monastery in the 14th century, but then destroyed in an earthquake in 1913 along with its frescoes. The modern church was constructed in 1951 from the remains of the old one.
