Nikopolis ad Istrum is an ancient roman city, located some 20 kilometers away from Veliko Tarnovo, adjacent to the Rositsa river. It was constructed in the beginning of the 2nd century AC by the emperor Trayanus after the victory over the Dacian tribe. It enjoyed vigorous growth under the reign of the emperors Constantine the Great and Justinian I, lasting till the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 17th century - in that period the town was devastated by the invasions of the Avars.
Archaeological excavations uncovered the fortified walls, main streets, many public buildings and dwellings of common people, thermaes, the agora etc. Also found were a marble statue Eros, a bronze head of Emperor Gordian III (238 Ц 244), minted in the city colonial coins, architectural details, inscriptions.
