One of the most unique phenomena, not just in Bulgaria but in the world as well. The sight is located near the "Sea-resort Capital of Bulgaria" - Varna. In truth, it resembles a forest of stone columns spreading around in area of 70 km?, hence the name - Stone Forest. The columns vary from 5 to 7 meters in height and 0.3 to 3 meters in width, cylindrically shaped with hollow core and highly eroded surface.
According to scientific studies, this marvel of nature was formed 50 million year ago, when Southeastern Europe was under sea water, resulting from underwater volcanic activity in combination with metan exhalation. While the metan gas made its way to the surface of the water, the erupting lava almost instantly congealed into hard rock when contacting the cold water. After the stone columns were formed the matan continued to make its way through the rock, thus turning it into tubes of stone.
The sight is acknowledged by the government as protected natural phenomenon in 1937.
