The Rose valley (Rozovata dolina) is a region in Bulgaria extending between Stara Planina and Sredna Gora mountains. Brought from India, through Persia, Syria and Turkey, the Rosa Damascena enjoys favorable climate conditions here – just right temperature, high humidity and light sandy forest soil.
Since 17th century Bulgaria has established itself as a key producer of rose oil. The Bulgarian rose oil has won golden medal at numerous exposition around the globe - Paris, London, Philadelphia, Antwerp, and Milan.
The cultural traditions in the production process have been sustained throughout the centuries. The roses are picked by hand and the picking starts at down and stops before noon so that the flowers are fresh and fully flourished. This is important if you want to attain high fragrance and moisture in the distillation process.
For the making of 1 litre rose oil you need to gather 3000-3500 kilos of blossoms, which would mean over 200 000 roses.
In the first weekend of June a rose festival takes places every year. The celebrations are carried out in the unique spirit of every town or village of the Valley.
The centre of this rose oil industry is Kazanlak, where an ethnographic complex has been constructed. Visitors of the complex can witness at first hand the original distillation process and try the magical products of the rose valley - perfumes, rose liquor, rose jam.
